Apple releases Mac OS X 10.9.1 Mavericks with Gmail and Safari fixes

SOFTWARE DEVELOPER Apple released Mac OS X 10.9.1 Mavericks on Monday.

The update, which follows the release of Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks in October, is unlikely to get anyone very excited, as it mainly delivers bug fixes and minor tweaks.

However, the update is likely to be welcomed by Gmail users, as Apple said that the software bump will get rid of Mac OS X compatibility problems.

According to Apple, Mac OS X 10.9.1 delivers "improved support for Gmail in OS X Mail, and fixes for users with custom Gmail settings". It claimed that the update "improves the reliability of Smart Mailboxes and search in Mail"."

The Mavericks update also fixes an issue that "prevented content groups from working properly in Mail", and sorts out a problem that stopped Voiceover from reading out sentences that contained emoji. Other fixes include updates to the iLife and iWork apps so that they will update on non-English systems, and a remedy for an issue that prevents a Contact group name from populating the address field.

A Safari update is also included, bumping the browser to version 7.1. Chief among the tweaks to Safari is a fix for a bug that could cause Safari to become unresponsive when filling out forms on fedex.com, stubhub.com, and other websites.

There's also improved Credit Card Autofill compatibility, and Apple has tweaked the browser so that the Shared Links Sidebar will now "periodically" refresh when it's open rather than requiring a manual refresh by users.

LOS ANGELES — Universal Pictures is shutting down production on “Fast & Furious 7” for an indefinite period following the death of one of the film’s stars, Paul Walker, ensuring a delayed release date for the big-budget picture.

Universal said in a statement on Wednesday that it would halt filming “for a period of time so we can assess all options available to move forward with the franchise.” The studio added, “We are committed to keeping ‘Fast & Furious’ fans informed, and we will provide further information to them when we have it.”

Simultaneously, the Los Angeles County coroner’s office released the results of an autopsy of Mr. Walker’s remains. Mr. Walker, 40, was the passenger in a Porsche that crashed into a light pole and tree on Saturday afternoon. He died of the combined effects of “traumatic and thermal” injuries, the coroner said. The driver of the car, Roger Rodas, died of “multiple traumatic injuries.”

The deaths were ruled accidental.

Mr. Walker died in suburban Los Angeles while on a Thanksgiving break from filming. “Fast & Furious 7,” which Universal had scheduled for release on July 11, is only about half-finished. “Right now, all of us at Universal are dedicated to providing support to Paul’s immediate family and our extended ‘Fast & Furious’ family of cast, crew and filmmakers,” the studio's statement said.
